Azerbaijan: Violence against Women

After quickly glancing at the Russian-language Day.az online publication, I came across to an overwhelming number of articles dealing with violence again women in Azerbaijan.  This week alone, the publication covers a lady killed by her  nephew, a man in prison for having killed his wife, a mom beaten to death by her son, and a 21-year-old in court for having raped his 15-year-old sister.   And this every in a country of less than 9 million people.   Azerbaijan’s neighbor Armenia was cond

Aronian: "Women cannot play chess"

"I have a lot of blood in my brain" Levon Aronjan explains why chess is war and not something for women Interview by Christian Schwager, Markus Lotter Mr Aronjan, since the beginnings of the game men have dominated chess. Why is that? Women cannot play chess. But that is no explanation. Wasn’t it your sister who taught you chess? That is true, but women are generally much too emotional for chess. If they want to play really well they have to change their character and suppress their natur

Dresden Olympiad r7

Bit swamped yesterday; Garry has a speech today in Munich and a Wall road Journal editorial appearing in both the European and US editions. And my mom-in-law is arriving today. (Hi Beth!) The epic round six podcast (video or mp3 only) is done and will be up at chessclub.com soon. I'll link to it here when it's up. The big guns are slugging it out at last. Armenia beat Azerbaijan in round six thanks to a nice new idea in the Sicilian by Akopian, who beat Mamedyarov. Qg4-h3 is good stuff. N

How do you wrap a goat for Christmas?

It is never a good idea to give an animal as a gift, except in this case. When I saw this catalog, I was skeptical. It’s just another gimmick to make me open it up. Actually I was amazed what was inside. If you could do one tiny thing to help a family living in poverty and this one thing would continue to help future generations, would you do it? This holiday season, rather than buy more toys for kids who already have closets full of toys or chocolates for people like me who don’t need

The Next Time: Huckabee's Book Tour

From GOP Catholics Perhaps the reason for some of the negative headlines about Huckabee's new book, Do The Right Thing, has to do with a simple fact. The GOP leadership knows Huckabee is the biggest threat to insider politicians like Mitt Romney for 2012 and wants to cease him before the nomination literally starts falling Huckabee's way. The leaders of the social conservative movement who helped nominate the closet liberal John McCain by refusing to help one of their possess in Mike Huckabee,

The Daily Update: Olympics Round 7, NAFI Round 8

The Daily Update: Olympics Round 7, NAFI Round 8 In the biggest match of the Olympics so far, the Armenian team upset the 2700-laden Russians 2.5-1.5 to seize solo first place. It came down to the last two games (the first two to finish had been drawn): Sargissian-Grischuk and Jakovenko-Petrosian. Sargissian sacrificed a piece for pawns and pressure, and made Grischuk suffer a long, long time, while Jakovenko had an extra pawn in a rook ending and was making Petrosian suffer. At the end of the

Eurasian Education Union (Uluslararası Avrasya Eğitim Sendikaları Birliği) supports Turkish as common language for Turkic republics

Here's a tiny piece on a Eurasian Education Union (Uluslararası Avrasya Eğitim Sendikaları Birliği, nice of a union of teachers' unions I think) that gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan, from the 3rd to the 4th of November. Apparently they criticized Armenia in the gathering because of the part of Azerbaijan Armenia still has below its control, but the more interesting part (to me as a student of languages that is) is that they also supported Turkish as the common language for Turkic republics, namely

BBC: "Violent nationalism blights Turkey"

BBC's Sarah Rainsford reports (her full report has been shown tonight on BBC's Newsnight programme) Writer Hrant Dink was the first victim, killed last year because some in Turkey could not tolerate what he stood for. To nationalists, he was a traitor. In a country where every citizen is defined as a Turk, Hrant Dink defined himself as ethnic Armenian. That was already subversive to some. But Mr Dink went further. He wrote about the expulsion and killing of hundreds of thousands of Ottoman Ar

The Resistible Rise of Bashar al-Asad

This is a guest post by Garvan Walshe It was March 14, 2005. One million Lebanese – Sunnis, Christians, more Shia than would admit it now, and Druze too gathered in the largest peaceful anti-government demonstration ever in the Arab world. In proportion to population, it was the largest anywhere, ever.  The whole world was watching, and the secret police of Assad Junior, ophthalmologist and dictator, were forced out in a bloodless revolution, known as the ‘independence intifada’.   But now t
